1. Close other apps using the camera
On most PCs only one app can use the webcam at a time. If Zoom, Teams, Discord, a browser tab with a call, or the Camera app has the camera open, the next app gets a black picture or an error. Close those apps completely, including from the system tray next to the clock, then try again. If you are not sure which app holds the camera, restarting the PC releases it.
2. Check the shutter and the camera key
- Many laptops have a small sliding cover over the lens. A closed shutter gives a black or dark gray picture while the camera itself works.
- Some laptops have a key that turns the camera off, usually an F key with a crossed-out camera icon, or a switch on the side of the case. Press it once and watch for an on-screen message.
- For USB webcams, plug the camera directly into the PC instead of a hub and try another port.
3. Turn on camera access
Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Camera and turn on Camera access, Let apps access your camera and Let desktop apps access your camera. Browsers, Zoom, Discord and most video call apps are desktop apps, so the last switch matters most. The list on the same page shows which apps used the camera recently.
4. Check the camera in Settings
Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras. Your webcam should appear under Connected cameras. Click it to see a preview and its settings. If it is listed under disabled cameras, select it and enable it. If it is not listed at all, Windows does not see the camera: check the cable, then the driver in step 6.
5. Try the Camera app
Open the Camera app from the Start menu. If it shows a picture, the camera, driver and Windows settings work, and the problem is in the app you were using. If it shows an error such as 0xA00F4244 (We can't find your camera), Windows does not see the device, or a privacy switch or antivirus is blocking it.
6. Update or reinstall the driver
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Cameras (some webcams appear under Imaging devices or Sound, video and game controllers).
- Right-click the webcam and choose Update driver.
- If that does not help, choose Uninstall device, restart the PC and let Windows install it again. On laptops, the maker's support page may have a newer camera driver.
- If the camera is missing, use Action > Scan for hardware changes in Device Manager.
7. Check your antivirus
Some security suites include a webcam protection feature that blocks apps they do not recognize, without any message in the app. Open your antivirus settings, look for webcam or privacy protection, and allow the app you want to use. Turning the feature off for a moment is a quick way to confirm it is the cause; turn it back on afterwards.
If the picture is very dark or choppy rather than black, the camera works. Add light in front of you: many webcams lower their frame rate in dim rooms.
8. Check the app's camera setting
- Google Meet: Settings (gear) > Video > Camera, and allow the camera for the site in the browser.
- Microsoft Teams: Settings and more (…) > Settings > Devices, then choose the camera.
- Zoom: Settings > Video, then pick the camera in the list.
- Laptops with a docking station or an external monitor often list two cameras. Pick the one you are facing.
Test the webcam on its own
The Hardcheck webcam test opens the camera in the browser and shows what it is really sending. Press Start, pick the camera in the Device list and check Resolution and Frame rate under the picture. If you see Your webcam works, the hardware and Windows are fine. If the test says another app is using the device, go back to step 1. Press Stop before you join your call, so the call app can open the camera.
Questions
Why is my webcam showing a black screen?
A closed privacy shutter, a camera key turned off or another app holding the camera are the usual causes. Open the shutter, close other apps and try again.
Why does Windows 11 say it can't find my camera?
The camera is disabled, blocked by a privacy setting or missing a driver. Check Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras and Device Manager > Cameras.
How do I know if the problem is the webcam or the app?
Open the Camera app or the Hardcheck webcam test. If you see yourself there, the webcam works and the fix is in the app's camera setting.
Can I use my webcam in two apps at once?
Usually not. Most webcams serve one app at a time on Windows, so close the first app before opening the second.
