Stick drift: how to test and fix it

Your character walks on its own or the camera slowly turns while you are not touching anything. That is stick drift. Here is how to measure it and what you can do.

What stick drift is

A thumbstick reports its position as two numbers, one for left and right and one for up and down. At rest both should be close to zero. Drift means the stick reports a position away from the center when you let go of it, so games read movement you are not making.

How to test for drift

  1. Connect the controller by USB or Bluetooth and open the Hardcheck controller test. Press any button so the browser detects it.
  2. Move both sticks in full circles a few times.
  3. Let go of both sticks and put the controller down on a table.
  4. Press Measure drift and do not touch it for 2 seconds.
  5. Read the verdict and offset for each stick, then measure two or three more times.

Offset versus dead zone

No stick rests at exactly zero. Games ignore a small area around the center, called the dead zone, so tiny offsets never reach the game. The test draws that dead zone as a dashed circle around the center of each stick and shows the offset on a scale where 1 is the edge of the stick's range.

VerdictWhat it means for you
No driftThe stick returns to the center. Check the game's settings instead.
Slight drift: fine with a dead zoneGames with a normal dead zone ignore it. You may notice it only in games where the dead zone is set very low.
DriftThe offset is as large as a typical dead zone: games read it as movement.

What causes drift

Sticks based on Hall effect or TMR sensors measure position with magnets instead of contact, so they do not wear in the same way. They are found on some third-party and replacement controllers.

Fixes to try, from easiest to hardest

  1. Update the controller: on Xbox use the Xbox Accessories app; the PS5 console updates the DualSense when you connect it by USB; the Switch updates controllers in System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Update Controllers.
  2. Clean around the stick: turn the controller off, push the stick to one side and blow compressed air into the gap, then rotate the stick in circles. Repeat in every direction.
  3. Calibrate where the system offers it. On Nintendo Switch, go to System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Calibrate Control Sticks. The PS5 and Xbox consoles do not include a stick calibration tool.
  4. Raise the dead zone. Many games have a dead zone or stick sensitivity setting, and Steam Input lets you set a dead zone per controller. This hides slight drift; it does not repair the stick.
  5. Measure again to see whether the verdict improved.

Do not spray cleaners or lubricants into the controller, and check your warranty before opening it: that can void it.

Warranty and repair

Stick drift is wear of a part, and it can come back after cleaning. If your controller is still under the manufacturer's warranty or within the store's return window, a Drift result in normal use is a good reason to ask for a repair or replacement. Take a screenshot of the result and contact the manufacturer or the store. Nintendo has offered Joy-Con repairs for drift; check its support page for the current terms in your region. Outside the warranty, a repair shop can replace the stick module, which usually means soldering.

Questions

How do I know if my controller has stick drift?

Let go of both sticks and press Measure drift in the controller test. After 2 seconds it shows No drift, Slight drift or Drift for each stick, with the offset.

Can stick drift be fixed for good?

Sometimes cleaning or calibration helps, but drift from wear often returns. A lasting fix is a new stick module, through warranty or a repair shop.

Does raising the dead zone fix drift?

It hides slight drift in that game, at the cost of a bit of precision near the center. It does not repair the stick, and strong drift may still get through.

Is stick drift covered by warranty?

Drift in normal use is usually treated as a defect while the controller is under warranty. Contact the manufacturer or the store with your test result.
